What You Need to Know About Staying Hydrated

August 20, 2019 Good to Know Info

Did you know that feeling thirsty means that you’re already dehydrated? That’s right, you shouldn’t feel the need to drink before heading towards the sink. No matter what kind of lifestyle you lead or what the weather is like outside, staying hydrated is essential to your health.

Water accounts for 60% of your body mass (that’s 92 pounds in a 155 pound person). This mighty molecule delivers nutrients to, from, and within cells, giving your body the energy that it needs to function at all levels. Water keeps your body cool, filters waste through your kidneys, promotes cardiovascular health and allows your muscles and joints to function properly. Water does a lot, which is why dehydration comes with a long list of side effects.

If your urine is clear or pale, your body is mostly hydrated, but if your urine is a dark yellow or brown, then you may begin feeling the mild to moderate side effects of dehydration. Early signs that you’re not drinking enough water include fatigue, dry mouth, dry skin, and headaches. These symptoms can quickly worsen into rapid heart rate, fever, low blood pressure, lightheadedness, or even shock and seizure.

Dehydration is serious, which is why you seriously need to drink enough water. So what’s the best way to quench your thirst?

Fresh water is the simplest way to keep your body hydrated. But when thirsty, most kids, and some adults, will reach for sweetened beverages like soda or juice instead of H20. But not only do these drinks lack nutritional value, but they pose a serious threat for type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, and more. Instead of cracking open a can of soda, try switching to club soda or sparkling water instead. You can even add a packet of low-calorie sweetener to satisfy your sweet tooth.

Hydrating your body doesn’t limit you to clear liquids. Certain fruits, like strawberries, peaches, and oranges, contain over 88% water. Choose from a variety of fruit smoothies at the Juice Hive, or opt for one of our cold-pressed juices for an extra dose of vitamins and minerals. Stop by to enjoy a fresh blend of water-rich foods that will keep you feeling happy and healthy.
