How to Build a Better Breakfast That Makes Hitting “Snooze” Less Tempting

Eating a nutritious breakfast that’s also exciting can be a tall order at any time of year, but with the kids back in school and your pre-holiday workload picking up, you might be especially tempted to pour yourself a bowl of cornflakes and call it a day right now. But September is National Better Breakfast Month, a seasonal reminder that “the most important meal of the day” is much more than an old wives tale.

A nutrient-rich breakfast will help you break through potential brain fog that’s brought on by low blood sugar and help keep your metabolism revved all day long. It also delivers many of the essential vitamins and minerals that your body needs to function. Regardless of what your pantry looks like right now, follow these guidelines to build a better breakfast that makes hitting “snooze” a little less tempting.

Eat Breakfast Every Day – We Mean It.

Skipping breakfast is one of the health field’s classic debates, but research suggests that you’re more likely to burn more calories throughout the day after eating breakfast than you are by skipping it – negating any benefit to consuming fewer calories. Why? The amount of energy needed to process and digest a meal is higher in the morning, meaning that breakfast eaters burn more calories just by enjoying their scrambled eggs.

Watch for Added Sugars

Even if you prefer savory breakfasts, added sugars can sneak in where we least expect them (like in pre-cooked breakfast meats, ketchup, and granola). Reach for the no-sugar-added products if you can, and try to keep the sugar count below 10g total.

Look for Lean Proteins

Bacon and sausage might be tasty, but it’s best enjoyed in moderation. Instead, look for sources of lean protein like eggs, Greek yogurt, nuts and nut butters, or fresh greens to add to your plate.

Power Up On Produce

There’s a reason why you grew up hearing that a serving of fruit was “part of this complete breakfast.” Not only are fruits full of essential vitamins and minerals, they’re also rich in fiber, meaning that they’ll keep you full for longer. It’s still hot here in the Lowcountry, so start your day on a chill note with a fresh fruit smoothie or smoothie bowl from The Juice Hive!
