The Art of Mindful Eating: How to Enjoy Your Food for Enhanced Digestion

Let’s be honest: mindful eating is easier said than done. Between grabbing a granola bar in the morning rush, your so-called lunch break catching up on emails, or zoning out to the latest Netflix show over dinner, it seems like every meal is spent multitasking. But what you eat can be just as important as how you eat, as mindful eating has been shown to improve digestion as well as help with weight loss. Here’s how to slow down and enjoy your food more thoroughly.

Try the Five S’s

Sit, slow down, savor, simplify, and smile. These are the basic tenets of mindful eating, and with some practice, they’ll become second nature before you know it. Sitting down – and slowing down – helps you chew and digest food effectively, and savoring each bite gives your brain time to process your satiation. Simplify your options by putting the leftovers away after your meal so you’re not tempted to overeat. While smiling between bites might sound weird, this will give you time to determine if you’re still hungry or are satisfied.

Step Away From Screens

There’s a reason why you tend to eat more while you watch TV. The added distraction slows your brain’s ability to accurately gauge how hungry or full you are, leading you to believe that you need more food.

Eat More Nourishing Foods

While mindful eating doesn’t dictate your diet, opting for fresh, flavorful, colorful foods that engage your senses will help you pay attention to the present moment. You’ll probably feel best if you focus on wholesome, healthy foods most of the time – although there’s always room for enjoying indulgences every now and then.
