The Do’s and Don’ts of Giving Hostess Gifts
Whether you’re thanking a party host or a friend who let you play houseguest for a vacation, a little gift can go a long way when it comes to showing your appreciation. But not all hostess gifts are created equal, and if you want the hostess to appreciate your gift as much as you appreciate a spot on her guest list, then a lightly-used gift card simply won’t do. Here are a few hostess gift do’s and don’ts to keep in mind for your next party.
DO Be Thoughtful
Most people could use an extra set of tea towels, but tea towels printed with a reference to the hostess’ favorite artists, vacation spot, or her initials? Those deserve a place of honor on her oven handle. There’s nothing wrong with buying universal gifts, but if you want to go the extra mile for your favorite party planner, a personalized gift is the way to go. Look for something that reminds you of her hobbies, family, or personality, and you have a winning gift.
DON’T Regift Something
Let’s be honest, we all have that stash of unused candles or cookie tins that make for easy gifting in a pinch, but it’s better to play it safe and buy the host something new. If you and the hostess are part of the same circle of friends, there’s a good chance she’ll find out that Susan gave you that mug for Christmas.
DO Give Edible Gifts
If the hostess is a minimalist, is in the process of moving (or unpacking), or you’re not sure about her personal style, skip the paperweight and treat her to something delicious instead. Chances are, she’ll appreciate the chocolate, spices, or coffee much more than “one more thing” she has to find a home for.
DON’T Choose Something That’s Too Expensive
While buying a luxury gift for the hostess is a nice gesture, you should actually avoid extravagantly or costly hostess gifts – especially if you’re not aware of the hostess’ financial situation. You don’t want to make her feel uncomfortable, especially if she can’t reciprocate with something of the same value in the future.
DO Find Something That Speaks to a Shared Experience
The hostess invited you because she values your relationship, so why not give her a gift that speaks to that bond? If you look forward to your weekly “girls’ nights” together, get her a craft cocktail kit to pair with your next rom-com. If you met through an outdoor activity class, some organic snacks and an insulated water bottle to fuel your next adventure might be just the thing.
